The Apogeeteam is growing! We’re so excited to be interviewing for eight roles across Apogee Journaland Perigee,our digital vertical. 

Thanks to continued support from our community of members as well as generous funding from the New York State Council on the Arts, we are able to offer a biannual stipend of $450 (per issue). Apogeeoperates non-hierarchically, and staff are paid according to a collectively-decided stipend structure in which all roles are compensated equally.  The time commitment is about 4-5 hours/week. We also hold virtual bimonthly staff meetings.

Apogee
is a journal of literature and art that encourages the thoughtful exploration of identity and its intersections, including but not limited to: race, gender, sexuality, class, and ability. We pay tribute to the Black feminist Combahee River Collective in our recognition that “the major systems of oppression are interlocking,” and to that end, work to combat the domination of white, cis-heteronormative, patriarchal voices in our literary landscape.

is seeking a Visual Arts Editor, a Communications Editor, and a Development Manager.

Visual Arts Editor
The Visual Arts Editor will be responsible for soliciting and selecting visual art pieces for each issue, published digitally two times a year.  The role will also include managing contracts and communicating with the Managing Editor on cover selections. This position would be well-suited for those who are knowledgeable about the contemporary art world, eager to grow community, and dedicated to

Communications Editor
The Communications Editor will spearhead the visual aesthetic and messaging of
Apogee’s communication through developing thoughtful social media campaigns, bottom-lining our social media presence (primarily Instagram & Twitter), envisioning the monthly newsletter, and drafting and editing editorials. The ideal fit for this role is someone who is excited by the potential of social media to connect Apogee’s community, is inventive about modes of engaging readers, and passionate about Apogee’s mission. The Communications Editor will work alongside the Managing Editor, Associate Editors, and Assistant Editors to execute Apogeecommunications. Graphic design and copywriting experience desired but not required. This role is stipend-based ($450 per biannual issue + $450 per biannual Perigee term) with hopes to increase this amount as we continue to grow. Tasks include…

    • Curating the monthly newsletter in collaboration with Associate & Assistant editors;
    • Creating a social media plan for each biannual issue. Bottom-lining execution of this plan in collaboration with Apogee Journaleditors;
    • Working with the PerigeeManaging Editor & Associate Editor to create a strategy and plan for Perigeesocial media, and supporting with execution;
    • Responding to interview requests, editing open letters, & strategizing general team communications.

Development Manager
Under the Executive Editor’s guidance, the Development Manager helps seek out sources of funding and determines
Apogee’s eligibility for them. As we seek long-term sustainability, the Development Manager will be someone passionate about and experienced in strategizing fundraising campaigns and grant writing, and who is open to discussing ethical questions surrounding who Apogeeaccepts funding from. Instead of stipend-based funding, the development manager receives 5% of successful grants and major donations (over $1K) that they participate in securing. Tasks include…

    • Assisting with developing and adjusting budget
    • Strategizing and overseeing end-of-year campaign and other fundraising campaigns

Roles with Perigee
Perigee
is Apogee’s online vertical. We are currently working towards a revamp of Perigeethis fall, at which time we hope to begin publishing every other week, building up to twice a week. We are seeking support with three areas: flash (fiction and nonfiction), outreach (primarily to incarcerated writers), and reviews and interviews. Accordingly, we are hiring for:

Flash Editor
The Flash Editor will have the exciting role of launching a new recurring segment for
Apogee.We’re looking for someone passionate about short short fiction (and nonfiction alike!), who is knowledgeable about the particular strengths of flash and its role as a prose form. In addition to soliciting pieces and coordinating with readers to select work, this position will also include managing contracts for accepted pieces and communicating with the managing editor on your selections. This role is stipend-based ($450 per biannual Perigeeterm) with hopes to increase this amount as we continue to grow. Tasks include…

    • Soliciting pieces, as well as reading and making decisions about accepting unsolicited submissions with support from readers. Sending decision notices to all submitters in a timely manner;
    • Editing pieces in collaboration with associate/assistant editor, and communicating directly with authors on edits;
    • Coordinating with managing editor on publication plan for each quarter, as well as communications editor on social media & newsletter;
    • Managing contracts for accepted pieces.

Outreach Editors (2)
In an effort to intentionally continue our work with incarcerated writers, we are starting an outreach team, made up of two outreach editors outside, as well as three editors inside. The outside editors will coordinate communication with the team of inside editors and work closely with the managing editor to collaborate with our partner in this project, Empowerment Avenue. We’re looking for folks passionate about publishing incarcerated writers who are knowledgeable about inside-outside communication and have experience building relationships with comrades inside. This role demands significant flexibility and accountability, as it involves communicating with a vulnerable population with numerous barriers to communication.     • Coordinating the mailing of call for submissions to jails and prisons with Empowerment Avenue and inside editors;

The Assistant or Associate Editor role (title to be decided in collaboration with applicant based on experience) is an integral part of the managing editorial team. As we work towards the
Perigeerevamp, we’re seeking someone who can hit the ground running in supporting the Managing Editor to swiftly onboard and support genre editors in getting the ambitious publishing schedule off the ground. This is a creative and managerial role in one. This role is stipend-based ($450 per biannual Perigeeterm) with hopes to increase this amount as we continue to grow, and an additional stipend available should the position substantively span both administrative and editorial work.     • Copyediting web pieces according to Chicago style;
