Highs and Lows

A. Raheem Ballard

Highs and lows, ups and downs, sometimes I feel as low as an ant on the ground,
Sometimes I’ll be laughing, just like a clown, and just like that my smile turns to a frown. These are the highs and the lows, the ups and the downs,
Some say, “Brother, you’re too sensitive, don’t take it that way!”
If only my brothers knew the struggles I have to endure each day,
The stress, the pain, do you hear what I say?
My highs are like eagles that fly free in the sky,
My lows resemble the depths even submarines won’t try,
My highs take me higher than the Empire State, my lows take to a religious man who just lost his faith,
My highs take me to the peak of a mountain top,
My lows take me to the rim of a volcano only to be dropped,
These are the highs and lows, the ups and downs,
My highs take me to the feelings of a man who just hit the lotto,
My lows awaken me to every single parent mother who’s poor in the ghetto,
My highs take me as close as I can get to the sun,
My lows place me face-to-face with a troubled teen and a gun,
My highs place me on the pedestal like the Olympians who threw up a fist,
My lows make me feel like a business executive whose wealth no longer exists
These are the highs and the lows, the ups and the downs, sometimes I feel as low
as an ant on the ground, sometimes, I’ll be laughing just like a clown…
